Netflix reigns supreme

According to a new study, Netflix is the most popular streaming service used throughout the duration of lockdown.

Netflix is the top streaming service in lockdown


The independent study results showed that over 78% of people that answered said they have used Netflix the most throughout their time at home in lockdown. The streaming giant charges just £5.99 per month and shows original content, documentaries, classic movies and new reality shows.

The original Documentary “Tiger King: Murder Mayhem and Madness” was a mammoth success for the platform throughout lockdown, it was watched by 64 million worldwide households within its first month of streaming, while also becoming a viral hit.

Films intended to be released in UK cinemas have also found a new home on Netflix due to theatre closures, “The Lovebirds” starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani was intended to be released by paramount pictures in the UK on April 3rdbut was instead distributed by Netflix with a new release date of May 22nd.

Netflix shows no sign of slowing down either, it has just released “Da 5 Bloods” by legendary director Spike Lee last week and will release a slew of other award season contenders later in the year including “Hillbilly Elegy” starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams as well as “The Old Guard” starring Charlize Theron. The service’s most popular original export “Stranger Things” will also return for a fourth series later in the year.

Out of the 50 participants surveyed, Amazon Prime scored 14% of the vote while Now TV scored just 2%. Disney’s new streaming service Disney+ attained 6% of the vote, it was released on the 24thMarch just one day after the draconian lockdown measures were introduced in the UK. The streaming service is the only place to watch Disney Classics and Pixar films, it also features original content aimed mainly at family viewing.
